Lot 16 - Water Line by Felim Egan

Felim Egan was a painter and sculptor, born in Strabane, County Tyrone. He studied art in Belfast and Portsmouth, followed by postgraduate studies at the Slade School of Art in London and the British School in Rome on a scholarship from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. He is most recognised for minimalist paintings and abstract bronze works.

His work focuses on balancing geometrical shapes against monochromatic backgrounds, playing with tension between line, shape, colour and form. His paintings have often been perceived in relation to the local landscape and seascape in Ireland, with his use of lines reflecting the shape of the landscape and tonal quality of blues, greys, and whites in his paintings.

Water Line, a limited-edition lithograph (Lot 16) reflects Egan’s abstract interpretation of the landscape, using geometric shapes to suggest the flow of water and rising peaks of mountains in earthy tones.

A member of Aosdána, Egan has held numerous major exhibitions including at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin (1996) and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (1999), among many others. He was presented with the UNESCO prize in Paris (1993) and the Premiere Prize at Cagnes-sur-Mer (1995). The artist was also chosen to represent Ireland at the Biennale de Paris (1981) and at the São Paulo Art Biennial (1985).

Large-scale commissions include works for Dublin Castle and the National Gallery of Ireland. Egan is represented in numerous collections, including those of the Irish Museum of Modern Art; Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery, Dublin; AIB, Ireland; Deutsche Bank, London and the European Parliament.
