Roy Petley is an impressionist painter, typically working en plein air depicting beach scenes and continental landscapes. At age sixteen, Petley received a scholarship to study art at Brighton University. After a semester, he instead hitchhiked to Italy, drawing Florentine scenes to provide a living and studying the work of the Old Masters. He returned to England in 1968, but first headed for Belfast where the Bell Gallery supported and encouraged him as a young artist.
Petley exhibited work in London throughout the 1970s, often at ‘The Open Air Art Show’ at Green Park. Following a chance encounter with the Duchess of Kent, Petley built a long-standing connection with the Royal Family as supporters of his art and his exhibitions ensued in London and Dublin, as well as internationally.
