Joseph Quilty was born in Limerick in 1914. He painted his entire life, often choosing the landscapes of Clare and Connemara as his subjects. He moved to England to work at his family’s shipping business. Whilst staying in London, he encountered Gerard Dillon, George Campbell and Arthur Armstrong, participating in Dillon’s art classes. Quilty was heavily influenced by the impressionists, particularly Cezanne.

Quilty’s reputation as a painter was established after returning to Ireland in 1978. He settled in Galway, often going to Burren and Connemara to paint en plein air. His exhibitions include the Irish Exhibition of Living Art, the Irish Universities Club, and the Cooling Gallery, London. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held with the Kenny Gallery as part of the Galway Arts Festival in 1999.
