James Richard Marquis became a pupil of the Royal Dublin Society’s School in 1847, then practised as a landscape and marine painter in Dublin. He began exhibiting with the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1853, he was elected an Associate in 1861, and then a Member the following year. A few years later he went to London and contributed to some exhibitions, whilst continuing to send paintings to the Dublin Academy also. Towards the end of his life, he married and lived mostly in Edinburgh. He exhibited in the Royal Scottish Academy from 1869 to 1873.
