Born in Dundee, Patrick studied painting at Glasgow School of Art from 1924 to 1928. He studied with Maurice Greiffenhagen, and later, in Paris. He began his career producing etchings but turned towards painting from the 1930s. He joined the staff of Dundee School of Art in 1929, continuing to teach there for the majority of his life.

Patrick produced portraits and still life studies but is most known for his landscapes of the Scottish countryside. These often feature a form of aerial composition, meticulous detail and bold colours. He was elected a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1957 and appointed OBE in the 1997 Birthday Honours.
