Dorothy Cross’s work ranges from sculpture, to drawing, photography and video. Her work incorporates themes of memory, desire, and the position of the human in nature. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, she attended the Crawford Municipal School of Art and studied at the San Francisco Art Institute.

Exhibiting regularly since the mid-1980s, her first major solo installation was ‘Ebb’ at the Douglas Hyde Gallery in Dublin. This was followed by 'Powerhouse', at the ICA in Philadelphia, the Hyde Gallery and Camden Arts Centre in London and Kerlin Gallery in Dublin. She represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale in 1993 and the Istanbul Biennial in 1997. A major retrospective of her work was held at the IMMA in 2005.
